Yes the problem is annoying! And it comes form Microsoft! I expect you are using Word 97 or the new Help compiler HCRTF/HCW

Your RTF can be perfect and you still get this. It's a bug in the HCW compiler, which cannot handle nested bullets/numbers arrangements. It does not properly un-nest them. In a paragraph just ahead of the first unwanted number you will find that you have an automatically generated numbering/bulleting scheme scheme at more than one level.

Delete them and insert manually, then re-compile. You may have to do this in several places in your file. Usually one level of auto-numbering or bulleting works OK, but manual is safer because it ALWAYS works.

Word 97 is *bug ridden*! The RTF produced is bad for creation of Help files and the HCRTF program is even worse.

Don't despair you can over come the problem but not without some effort. The formatting in the document or some paragraphs is corrupt due to the Word 97 conversion. There is hidden information/ghost number & bullets

  • Create a new Word 97 document and re-type and the problem goes away!
  • Reformat/Re-type the offending paragraphs AND those nearby (Above & Below)
  • Try toggling the bullets & number via the formatting toolbar on,off,on,off, then apply your formatting.
  • Try to use proper styles for bullets & numbered lists.
  • Do not have a full stop (.) after the number.
