The HCP Help compiler can't deal with embedded pictures over 64k or over 16 colours.

The Help compiler has big problems with graphics over 64K and of more than 16 colors. This is a limitation (bug) in the Old Microsoft Help compiler (HCP.EXE)

This can be overcome if you use the newer 32 bit Help Compiler, HCRTF.EXE.

However, when using EasyHelp/Web with the HCP compiler, you can sometimes get around this limitation by following the rules:

  1. Insert pictures as Insert | Picture | 'Link to file'

The 'link to file is important! If you 'embed' pictures the Help compiler will *never* work with picture over 64K
  2. Put a copy of the picture in the 'graphics path' for your EasyHelp project.

If there still is a problem convert the file to a WMF. WMF file can work better than BMPs.

Better still, use the SHED editor and make a SHG file. These are more memory efficient.

If this does not work reduce the number of colors in the picture.

Additional note

TO display 256 colour pix reliably from within WinHelp *without* a DLL, convert the 256 colour graphic to a WMF and use SHED to convert the WMF to a 256 colour SHG. SHGs created this way *always* display correctly (and in 256 colours, palette clashes notwithstanding) in the compiled HLP file.
